DIY Museum Masking Policy

Updated on April 28th, 2025: DIY Museum is now requiring respirator-quality masks at ALL of our events, both indoor and outdoor.

  1. We are one of the few remaining art + cultural groups that continues to require masks. We want our policy to be clear and universal. Masks are required.

  2. Requiring masks at every event, indoors and outdoors, means more people can attend our events safely. Almost anyone can wear a mask, but not everyone feels safe attending an event where masking isn’t guaranteed.

  3. According to the People’s CDC in their Safer Gatherings guide1, “Masking is a key protection. Other layers of protection should not be seen as a substitute for masking.” This includes but is not limited to: having the event outdoors, requiring testing, and using air purifiers.

  4. COVID moves through the air like smoke2, which makes it particularly dangerous - even outside. Rapid tests are decreasing in accuracy3, meaning it is all the more important we mask up, even when testing is required. Up to 44% of COVID cases are asymptomatic, someone could feel completely healthy but still transmit COVID unknowingly4.

  5. Long COVID disproportionately affects BIPOC5 and Transgender6 individuals. By wearing masks, we can effectively prevent the most marginalized members of our community from contracting a disease that would change their lives forever.

  6. Our goal is for all of our attendees to be healthy, safe, and not financially taxed via having to take sick days after attending a DIY event. We can achieve this goal by wearing masks, as they protect from all airborne illnesses, not only COVID.

  7. “Keeping one another safe and healthy is essential to any liberatory vision.” - People’s CDC

  8. As always, our events have masks available for anyone who needs one, thanks to donations from East Bay Mask Bloc, Mask4Mask Bay Area, Common Humanity Collective, and others.

Thank you all for masking up with DIY Museum. We keep us safe <3
